If you are looking for a developmentally disabled services organization, then you will need to know what questions to ask so that you can choose the one that is right for your specific situation. Some innovative assistance programs give individuals the chance to live in a small community where they can focus on learning life management skills through training and other activities that are determined on a case by case basis. This community should have professionals that can also provide care for individuals with disabilities. This care might include respite assistance, housekeeping, personal hygiene, and meal preparation. Alternatives to a residential programs are day programs that allow individuals to live in their own housing while still getting training and participating in activities that aid them in learning life management skills. Some of these programs also have in-home professionals with training that helps assisting and helping people with disabilities perform daily chores that might be difficult for them. Some education projects focus on helping individuals get the training that is necessary for them to find jobs. Employment often has a highly positive impact on a person's life because it allows them to become financially independent. This means that they can afford apartments, housing, or rental properties. Some programs offer emergency shelters to those who need them, but help the person find housing as he or she learns the skills that are needed. Choosing a program that assigns you to a coach can often produce positive results quickly. By assisting you in your training and being directly involved in helping you reach your goals, the coach should be able to determine if you are making the progress that you need.
